Sedation: Separating the Facts from the Fiction
Many parents are understandably anxious when advised their
child requires sedation in order to provide necessary and
sometimes extensive dental treatment. Conscious sedation is a
behavior management technique that uses medication to assist a
child in coping with fear and anxiety and in cooperating with
dental procedures. As pediatric dentists, we are trained in the safe administration of these
agents and the appropriate monitoring of the sedated child as
part of our specialty education.
We attend the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AADP)
continuing education courses on sedation each year to keep us
well informed of new developments in safe sedation techniques.
Guidelines developed and published by the AADP further ensure
your child's safety. Our office strictly adheres to and follows these
guidelines for every child.
Dr. Nelle, Dr. Betty and Dr. Sean attend sedation courses annually. They
are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Both hold
certificates for office sedation administered by the Colorado
State Board of Dental Examiners. In fact, our office has safely
sedated children since 1977.
Dr. Nelle, Dr. Betty and Dr. Sean are Board Certified by the American
Board of Pediatric Dentists. They are on the staff at The
Children's Hospital, Lakewood Surgical Center and Park Meadows
Surgery Center.
If you are considering sedation in conjunction with your child's
dental care, ask us to discuss with you the sedation
options, alternatives to sedation, procedures that will be
followed and instructions you and your child must follow to
assure a successful sedation visit.
